Kumari (Aloe vera): A Comprehensive Ayurvedic Perspective
Kumari, botanically known as Aloe vera, is one of the most celebrated herbs in Ayurveda. Referred to as a potent rejuvenator, detoxifier, and female tonic, Kumari has earned an esteemed place in Ayurvedic classics. Its use spans various systems of medicine globally, but its description in Ayurveda offers profound insight into its role as a Rasayana, Tikshna Virechaka (sharp purgative), and Stree-Roga Hara (curer of gynecological disorders).
Arsha refers to the formation of growths (like piles) in the anal canal due to the vitiation of Doshas, especially Vata and Pitta. The causative factors include sedentary lifestyle, improper food, suppression of natural urges, and constipation. These lead to deranged Apana Vata, causing local pressure, inflammation, and tissue outgrowths in the anal region.

Kumari’s latex contains potent anthraquinones like aloin that stimulate peristalsis, making it one of the classical Tikshna Virechana Dravyas. These dravyas are sharp purgatives used for forceful cleansing of the Annavaha and Purishavaha Srotas. Kumari’s action is distinct for being both detoxifying and Rasayana, which makes it effective in conditions of Ama, Pitta aggravation, and blood toxicity.
It is particularly preferred when Virechana is indicated in skin disorders, liver diseases, and gynecological conditions.
Kumari, or Aloe vera, holds a significant place in Ayurveda due to its broad spectrum of actions across multiple systems of the body. It is especially impactful in Arsha (piles) and gynecological disorders, where its Tikshna, Snigdha, and Rasayana properties work in synergy. As a natural purgative, liver tonic, blood purifier, and uterine regulator, Kumari truly lives up to its name, meaning “the maiden”—symbolizing purity, rejuvenation, and feminine health. Properly used, it serves as a versatile herb in both preventive and curative Ayurvedic therapy.
