Arka, botanically known as Calotropis gigantea, is a well-known plant in Ayurvedic medical science. It belongs to the Asclepiadaceae family and is widely found in India and tropical regions. In Ayurveda, it is classified among the potent Tikshna (sharp), Ushna (hot), and Virechana (purgative) drugs, and has a powerful action on balancing doshas when used properly. Though toxic in large doses, in carefully administered Ayurvedic formulations, it becomes a valuable herb with a multitude of therapeutic benefits.
Arsha, commonly known as hemorrhoids or piles, are a condition involving swelling and inflammation of the veins in the rectum and anus. In Ayurveda, Arsha is described as Mamsa-ankura (fleshy growth) occurring due to imbalances in the doshas, especially Vata and Kapha. The vitiation leads to improper Agni (digestive fire), resulting in Ama (toxins), which accumulates and affects the Raktavaha srotas (channels of blood), leading to pile mass formation.
Types of Arsha:
Sahaja Arsha – Congenital
Nija Arsha – Caused by doshic imbalance (Vataja, Pittaja, Kaphaja, etc.)
Agantuja Arsha – Due to trauma or injury
In Vataja Arsha, dryness, pain, and hard masses dominate. In Pittaja Arsha, there is burning sensation and bleeding. In Kaphaja Arsha, slimy, soft, and heavy pile masses are seen.
Arka plays a significant role in treating Arsha due to the following properties:
Deepana (Appetizer) – Improves digestive fire (Agni), reducing Ama accumulation.
Pachana (Digestive) – Helps in digesting Ama, the root cause of most diseases.
Virechana (Purgative) – Removes toxins and clears the bowels, relieving pressure in the anorectal area.
Krimighna (Anthelmintic) – Eliminates parasitic infestations which can aggravate Arsha.
Shothahara (Anti-inflammatory) – Reduces swelling of pile mass.
Lekhana (Scraping) – Reduces extra tissue (mass), especially in Kaphaja Arsha.
Vedana Sthapaka (Pain reliever) – Alleviates pain associated with Vataja Arsha.
Stambhana (Astringent effect) – Useful in bleeding piles.
The latex of Arka is directly used to apply over the pile mass or used in processed formulations. It cauterizes and shrinks the pile mass due to its Tikshna and Ushna nature. A famous method is using Arka Ksheera to prepare medicated threads (Ksharasutra) used in surgical management of Arsha.

The latex and root bark are used in controlled dosages to induce purgation.
It is especially valuable in treating Udara roga (ascites), Gulma (tumors), and Amavata.
The Tikshna nature helps remove deep-seated Ama from the Pakvashaya (colon), bringing systemic balance.
Due to its Teekshna, Ushna, and Sara properties, Arka effectively drives toxins out of the body and restores equilibrium to the doshas.
Arka (Calotropis gigantea) is a powerful herb that exemplifies the duality of Ayurvedic healing—dangerous in unrefined form but highly therapeutic when used with precision and understanding. From treating Arsha to a broad range of disorders, its applications span Shamana (palliative), Shodhana (detox), and even surgical realms (Ksharasutra). Ayurveda honors such herbs with caution and reverence, acknowledging their potential to heal as well as harm.
