Krishna Jeerak (Carum carvi, also known as black caraway or black cumin) is a powerful Deepana-Pachana (digestive stimulant and carminative) herb in Ayurveda. It is particularly effective in Amlapitta (hyperacidity / acid reflux), where excess Pitta accumulation in the stomach leads to acid regurgitation, heartburn, indigestion, and inflammation of the gastric mucosa.
Due to its Tikta (bitter) and Katu (pungent) Rasa, Laghu (light) and Ruksha (dry) Guna, and Ushna (hot) Virya, Krishna Jeerak acts as a Pitta modulator, helping to balance excessive acid production while strengthening digestion and reducing gastric discomfort.
If untreated, Amlapitta can result in chronic acid reflux, peptic ulcers, and nutrient malabsorption.
Krishna Jeerak is obtained from the dried seeds of Carum carvi, belonging to the Apiaceae family.
✅ Churna (Powder): 500 mg – 1g, taken with warm water or buttermilk.
✅ Kashaya (Decoction): 30-50 ml, taken twice daily after meals.
✅ Tablet/Vati: 1-2 tablets, taken after meals for acid balance.
❌ Avoid in excessive dryness conditions, as it has a mild diuretic effect.
❌ Use cautiously in severely depleted Pitta individuals, as it still has a heating effect.
❌ Pregnant women should use with guidance, as Krishna Jeerak can mildly stimulate digestion.
Krishna Jeerak (Carum carvi) is one of the most effective Ayurvedic herbs for Amlapitta (hyperacidity and acid reflux). It works by balancing stomach acid, reducing bloating, absorbing excess acidity, protecting the gut lining, and preventing reflux. With its Pitta-modulating, digestion-enhancing, and toxin-clearing properties, Krishna Jeerak significantly improves gut health, reduces heartburn, and restores optimal digestion.
