Hingu (Ferula asafoetida) is one of the most potent Deepana-Pachana (digestive stimulant and carminative) herbs in Ayurveda. It is especially highly effective in Ajeerna (indigestion), which is primarily a disorder of Agni (digestive fire). Due to its unique Tikshna (sharp), Laghu (light), and Ushna (hot) properties, it helps in breaking down undigested food, pacifying aggravated Vata and Kapha, and restoring normal digestive function.
Hingu is a gum resin extracted from the roots of Ferula asafoetida.
Hingu directly acts on Jatharagni (digestive fire) by stimulating gastric secretions, bile flow, and enzymatic activity.
๐น Action:
โ Activates Pachaka Pitta, aiding in complete digestion.
โ Improves gut motility, preventing food stagnation.
Hingu breaks down undigested food residues, preventing fermentation and toxin accumulation.
๐น Action:
โ Dissolves Ama in the gastrointestinal tract, improving digestion.
โ Clears intestinal blockages, reducing symptoms like bloating and heaviness.
In Ajeerna, Vata and Kapha get aggravated, leading to bloating, cramps, and sluggish digestion. Hinguโs hot, light, and sharp properties counteract these imbalances.
๐น Action:
โ Relieves bloating (Adhmana) and gas (Anaha) by normalizing Apana Vayu.
โ Prevents excessive mucus secretion, reducing Kapha-induced heaviness.
Hingu acts as a natural antispasmodic, relaxing intestinal muscles and relieving colicky pain due to gas or poor digestion.
๐น Action:
โ Reduces intestinal cramping and spasms.
โ Improves peristalsis, ensuring smooth movement of food.
Ajeerna can increase harmful gut bacteria, leading to fermentation, bloating, and loose stools. Hingu inhibits bacterial overgrowth and restores gut balance.
๐น Action:
โ Kills harmful gut microbes, preventing diarrhea and bloating.
โ Prevents fermentation of undigested food, reducing foul-smelling gas.
โ
Churna (Powder) โ 250 mg โ 500 mg, mixed with warm water after meals.
โ
Vati (Tablet) โ 1-2 tablets, taken 2 times a day after meals.
โ
Hingwashtaka Churna โ ยฝ teaspoon with warm ghee or buttermilk for enhanced digestion.
โ Not recommended for Pitta-dominant individuals (as it may increase acidity).
โ Avoid in active ulcers or severe gastritis.
โ Pregnant women should use with caution, as it has uterine-stimulating effects.
Hingu (Ferula asafoetida) is one of the most potent herbal remedies for Ajeerna (Indigestion) in Ayurveda. It enhances Agni, eliminates toxins, prevents gas accumulation, reduces intestinal spasms, and restores gut health. By correcting the Vata-Kapha imbalance and stimulating digestion, it ensures complete digestion and relief from bloating, heaviness, and abdominal discomfort.

Hingu is primarily cultivated in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran, Afghanistan, and parts of Central Asia. India, being one of the major consumers, imports large quantities of asafoetida. The plant requires a dry, temperate climate and is cultivated in sandy, well-drained soils. The extraction process involves tapping the root or rhizome to collect the resinous gum.
Ferula asafoetida is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows up to 1.5-2 meters in height. It has thick, carrot-like roots, with compound leaves and yellow flowers. The resin, which is the medicinal part, is obtained by incising the root and stems.
This plant is native to Iran and Afghanistan and thrives in dry, rocky slopes at altitudes of 600-1200 meters. It is also found in some parts of Pakistan and India (mainly Kashmir and Ladakh regions, where it is cultivated on a small scale).
Resins (40-60%) โ Mainly composed of ferulic acid esters.
