Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica) is one of the most potent Deepana-Pachana (digestive stimulant and metabolic enhancer) herbs in Ayurveda. It is particularly effective in Grahani (a disorder resembling Irritable Bowel Syndrome – IBS), which is caused by impaired Agni (digestive fire) and dysfunction of the Grahani organ (small intestine, primarily the duodenum).
In Grahani, the digestion and assimilation of food are disturbed due to Vata-Pitta or Kapha imbalances, leading to symptoms like irregular bowel movements, indigestion, bloating, and fatigue. Chitrak, with its hot potency (Ushna Virya), sharp action (Tikshna Guna), and deep-penetrating nature, helps in rekindling digestive fire, regulating peristalsis, reducing toxins (Ama), and restoring normal gut function.
If untreated, Grahani can lead to nutritional deficiencies, chronic fatigue, and a weakened immune system.
Chitrak is obtained from the roots of Plumbago zeylanica, a medicinal shrub from the Plumbaginaceae family.

Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica) is one of the most effective Ayurvedic herbs for Grahani (IBS). It works by stimulating digestion, detoxifying the gut, strengthening the intestines, balancing gut motility, and preventing infections. With its Kapha-Vata balancing, Agni-enhancing, and anti-microbial properties, Chitrak significantly improves gut health, prevents bloating, and restores normal digestive function.
