Isabgol (Plantago ovata) in Ayurveda Medical Science
Isabgol, commonly known as Psyllium husk, is one of the most widely used natural remedies in Ayurveda for digestive health. It is highly valued for its ability to regulate bowel movements and relieve constipation. It belongs to the Plantaginaceae family and is cultivated primarily in India and Iran.
Constipation (Vibandha) is a condition primarily caused by an aggravated Vata dosha, leading to dryness in the intestines, improper movement of stool, and difficulty in excretion. This results in hardened stool, bloating, abdominal discomfort, and an increased risk of developing hemorrhoids (Arsha).
In Ayurveda, digestion is governed by Agni (digestive fire), and when Agni becomes weak due to an imbalance in doshas, it leads to improper digestion and assimilation of food, resulting in Ama (toxic waste accumulation). Ama accumulation can further aggravate constipation and lead to various other digestive disorders.
Mriduvirechak (Mild Laxative) β Promotes smooth bowel movements by absorbing water and forming bulk.
Vatanuloman (Regulating Vata) β Reduces excessive dryness and restores natural bowel function.
Pittashamak (Pacifying Pitta) β Has cooling properties, preventing acid reflux and gastritis.
Shothahara (Anti-inflammatory) β Reduces intestinal inflammation and soothes mucosal linings.
Deepana (Appetizer) β Enhances digestion without disturbing natural intestinal flora.
Pachana (Carminative and Digestive) β Helps in digesting undigested food particles and preventing bloating.
Rasayana (Rejuvenative Effect) β Supports gut health and enhances nutrient absorption.
Arshoghna (Anti-Hemorrhoidal) β Prevents straining and reduces the risk of hemorrhoids.
